Hamstring Strain (Pull) Stage 3

  • Seven days or more after the injury it is important to do the following:
  • Gentle stretching and strengthening of the hamstring.
  • Massage and foam rolling of the muscle.
  • Contrast hydrotherapy (see videos below).
  • When symptoms are at 95% better you can get back to running, using the correct protocol for gently introducing running (video), and running running with good form (click here)
  • Perform the ‘IMPORTANT’ and ‘OPTIONAL’ video advice below.
  • Perform the ‘ESSENTIAL CHECKS’ videos below, which assess if you need orthotics, how stable your hip muscles are (if they are not, then click here),  if there is a difference in your leg lengths, whether you need new shoes, if your core stability is strong enough (if it isn’t, then click here).
  • Before following the rehabilitation advice, read our treatment precautions.
  • To accelerate speed of recovery, continue to perform the advice given in Stage 2.

Attention!

If care is not taken with correct rehabilitation lasting stiffness and weakness can occur in the hamstring, as well as reoccurence of the injury itself.
